‘Vimba’ exposes shop allegedly selling toxic alcohol ice to schoolkids

Moja Love’s hard-hitting investigative anti-crime programme Vimba has uncovered an operation in which a local spaza shop was found allegedly mixing methylated spirits with cheap alcohol and freezing the dangerous concoction to sell as ‘ice blocks’ to schoolchildren.

The shocking exposure aired during Sunday night’s episode, revealing how these illicit, spiked treats were allegedly being targeted directly at primary and high school learners during school hours.

Deadly concoction poses severe health risks

According to investigators on the show, the toxic mixture contains high concentrations of industrial methylated spirits, a substance packed with methanol that is poisonous when ingested.

Medical experts and community members have expressed horror at the discovery, noting that children consuming these frozen treats exhibit severe behavioural and neurological symptoms comparable to heavy substance dependence. Ingestion of methanol can lead to metabolic acidosis, permanent optic nerve damage, blindness, acute liver failure, organ failure, and sudden death.

The practice of masking industrial spirits with sweet flavourings in ice packaging allows illicit traders to bypass standard regulations while profiting from underage consumers who are unaware of the life-threatening chemicals inside.

Community outrage and demands for SAPS action

The broadcast has sparked widespread outrage across social media and local township communities, with parents, teachers, and civic activists demanding immediate police intervention, health inspector raids, and the permanent closure of all non-compliant outlets.

Community leaders have urged parents, guardians, and school governing bodies to maintain strict vigilance regarding informal vendors operating around school gates and neighbourhood shops.

Authorities are investigating the findings, with law enforcement under pressure to launch swift operations against illegal vendors selling toxic chemical mixtures to minors.
