The news of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and his lovely wife Rachel announcing the end of their marriage was the last thing South Africans expected to hear.
As shocked as many may be, it appears as though the collapse of high-profile marriages in our beautiful country is not something that is unfamiliar to the broader public. Over the past few decades, there have been several instances where some of our most beloved public figures had to end relationships with those they once vowed to be with ’till death do us part.’
Here is a list of South African public figures who have gotten divorced.
Nelson and Winnie Mandela
Like many, Nelson better known as the father of the nation, has had his fair share of marriage failure. After his release from jail, the iconic duo who have had a history of fighting against the laws of apartheid, announced the news that their 38 year marriage was over in 1992.
News publication IOL reported that after Mandela’s release from prison he confessed that his relationship with Winnie was strained on both personal and professional levels because of her public behaviour.
Matthew and Sonia Booth
Former Bafana Banfana soccer player Matthew Booth and his ex-wife Sonia have had their fair share of publicised breakups.
After 16 years of marriage, the Miss South Africa 2001 second-up and the retired footballer announced their breakup in 2022. This came amid allegations of infidelity in which Matthew was alleged to have been guilty of.
Rassie and Nicolene Erasmus
Known to be one of South Africa’s most loved, well respected, and most successful Springbok coaches – Rassie has officially cemented a special place in the hearts of South Africans.
However, earlier this year, many were shocked by the bombshell that the beloved coach and his wife of 20 years, Nicolene, had gone through a divorce.
To date, little is still known about the reasons for the end of their marriage; however, internet users at the time rallied behind the Bok mastermind, encouraging them to work things out again.
