South African influencer and content creator Sarah Langa has opened up about a distressing travel experience after allegedly losing luxury items worth over R100,000 during a trip to Paris, France.

What was meant to be a glamorous international getaway quickly turned into a nightmare, with the media personality revealing that her luggage had been tampered with before she even settled into her trip.

Sarah Langa’s trip to Paris goes wrong

Taking to social media, Sarah detailed how she discovered the theft only after arriving at her hotel in Paris. According to the influencer, her suitcase had been forced open, with clear signs of damage, including a jammed lock and broken zipper.

“The moment I opened my bag, I knew something was wrong,” she shared, showing followers the condition of her high-end Rimowa suitcase.

Sarah claimed that despite taking precautions and securing her luggage, the alleged thieves were still able to gain access to her belongings.

Thousands lost in designer items

The influencer estimates that luxury items worth more than R100,000 — and in some reports as much as R130,000 — were stolen from her baggage. Among the missing items were several pairs of designer shoes, some unworn, high-end sunglasses, and clothing items, including swimwear.

The loss left Sarah in a difficult position, particularly as she had packed the items specifically for her trip.

“I was basically walking around barefoot,” she said, explaining how the incident disrupted her plans.

Sarah did not hold back in expressing her anger, directly calling out the airline involved in her travel. She claimed the ordeal had effectively ‘ruined’ her vacation before it even started, sparking a wave of reactions online.

Her posts quickly gained traction, with many social media users sharing similar travel horror stories and warning others to be cautious.

Limited compensation

The situation is further complicated by airline compensation policies. According to international aviation rules referenced by the airline, payouts for lost or damaged baggage are typically capped at around €1,880 (approximately R35,000) — far below the value of Sarah’s reported losses.

This means she may only recover a fraction of what was stolen, even if her claim is successful. Despite the setback, Sarah has since told followers that she is doing better, although she admitted the experience left her emotional.

“I cried about it… I’m fine now,” she said, noting that she shared her story to raise awareness for other travellers.

She urged others to stay vigilant when travelling internationally, especially when carrying valuable items.

While the ordeal marked a rough start to her Paris trip, Sarah has since resumed sharing glimpses of her time in the city, suggesting she is making the most of the situation despite the loss.

Her experience highlights an issue many travellers face but rarely speak about — luggage theft — and serves as a reminder that even high-security baggage is not immune to criminal activity.
