Phumeza and Shota’s divorce heats up

Divorce is never easy, not for anyone or celebrity couples, and certainly not when children are involved. News broke some time last year that actress and TV personality Phumeza Shoba is divorcing her husband, musician Mnqobi ‘Shota’ Shoba, after 11 years of marriage.

According to Sunday World, Phumeza initiated divorce proceedings in July 2025, instructing her lawyers to file the necessary papers.

Although neither party has publicly confirmed the split, the story underscores the complexities of love, betrayal, and the difficult choices people face when marriage no longer feels safe.

Reports emerged this past weekend that the estranged couple’s court battle has taken another turn, with further legal tensions looming as their ongoing maintenance matter continues in the Johannesburg High Court.

The latest dispute centres on claims regarding Shota’s financial position after he allegedly opposed Phumeza’s application for R65 000 in spousal maintenance and R22 000 in child maintenance for their two children.

Phumeza side-eyes Mnqobi’s financial situation

According to Briefly News, court papers show that the music producer claimed he is currently unemployed and has been relying heavily on handouts from close associates to survive. In previous reports, Mnqobi even alleged that global superstar DJ Black Coffee, a close friend and collaborator, had been helping the family financially by securing a R3.5 million property, purchasing two luxury vehicles, and funding aviation studies for their eldest child, Khumo.

However, Phumeza is challenging these claims made about Shota’s finances, maintaining that he continues to earn income through his entertainment career and business interests. Phumeze allegedly submitted documents to the court, which she claims show that Shota’s companies generated close to R2 million in revenue between May and September 2025.
