New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sparked interest among South African music fans after revealing some of the African personalities and performers he would choose for New York City.

In a video shared by Okay Africa on social media, the Cape Town-educated politician was asked to make his picks, with the mayor choosing late South African rapper Riky Rick when asked who he believed would make the best mayor.
He also named South African DJ duo Major League DJz among the African performers he would want to see perform in New York City.

Zohran Mamdani’s Riky Rick pick gets attention
Riky Rick, who died in February 2022, remains one of South Africa’s most influential hip-hop figures. Known for his distinctive fashion sense, music and entrepreneurial spirit, the rapper left a lasting mark on Mzansi’s entertainment industry.
Zohran’s choice is likely to resonate with South African fans who continue to celebrate the late rapper’s contribution to music and youth culture.
The Nafukwa hitmaker was also known for his influence beyond music, particularly through his Cotton Fest platform, which brought together music, fashion, street culture and young creatives.

Major League DJz get a New York nod
Zohran also selected Major League DJz as among the African acts he would like to see perform in New York City.
The South African DJ and production duo, made up of Banele and Bandile Mbere, have built an international reputation for their amapiano sound and Balcony Mix series.
The brothers have increasingly taken South African music to international audiences through performances, collaborations and global tours. Their official channels currently list international performances and projects, including dates in New York and other overseas markets.

Zohran Mamdani’s connection with music and culture
The mayor’s choices come as he continues to show a strong interest in music and cultural communities in New York.
Zohran recently highlighted Caribbean culture in the city, including attending the West Indian American Day Carnival. He has also spoken publicly about his favourite reggae, dancehall and African songs, naming artists such as Bob Marley, Sister Nancy, Charly Black and Nigerian artist Skales among his favourites.
His engagement with music and cultural events has become a noticeable part of his public image as mayor.
