Former radio personality and cultural activist Ngizwe Mchunu has withdrawn a case against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters who were accused of taking sound equipment during a tense confrontation in Inanda, north of Durban.

Mchunu announced the decision outside the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court, where the accused appeared in connection with charges relating to the possession of allegedly stolen goods.
The dispute unfolded as political and cultural events were being prepared in the same area. The EFF was preparing for its KwaZulu-Natal provincial manifesto launch, while Mchunu was hosting a heritage celebration at the Bhambayi Sports Ground.
Despite the confrontation, Mchunu said his heritage event eventually proceeded peacefully after police intervention.
Ngizwe Mchunu’s dispute with EFF supporters
According to reports, tensions escalated after EFF supporters arrived at the venue to put up promotional boards for the party’s planned event. Mchunu’s supporters disputed the EFF’s position that the heritage event had not followed the necessary protocols.
The confrontation reportedly became heated, with allegations of firearms being present and shots being fired. The EFF alleged that Mchunu and his security personnel fired at its supporters, while Mchunu’s camp disputed those allegations.
Mchunu stated that he no longer believed there was a necessity to proceed with the case against the accused, especially since some of those charged were young individuals. Additionally, he raised concerns about the absence of senior EFF leaders during the court proceedings and suggested that some of the accused might have been manipulated by others.

“I don’t see a need to continue pursuing this matter,” Mchunu noted, according to IOL‘s report on his comments.
Letting bygones be bygones
Mchunu said he intended to approach the company that supplied the sound equipment and request that its lawyers withdraw the case. He acknowledged that the final decision on how the matter proceeds rests with the court.
He expressed hope that those involved had learned from the incident and that the matter could now be resolved without further escalation.
The allegations surrounding the confrontation remain disputed, with the EFF and Mchunu’s camp giving different accounts of what happened.
The withdrawal of the case relates to the alleged possession of stolen sound equipment and does not, by itself, resolve the competing allegations about the broader confrontation.
