Scheduled to premiere on 30 October 2026, the three-part series marks an expansion of the popular franchise that previously delivered fan-favourite entries How to Ruin Christmas and How to Ruin Love.

Produced by Burnt Onion Productions in collaboration with filmmaker Jayan Moodley, known for the acclaimed Kandasamys franchise, the new iteration blends signature South African family dysfunction with the vibrant festivities and cultural traditions of Diwali.

A collision of cultures and families

The narrative centres on an unexpected engagement that forces two vastly different households under one roof during the festival of lights. Rosemary Zimu-Mnguni stars as Mmabatho alongside Kyle Clark as Varshen, an interracial couple whose attempts to bring their families together quickly spiral into chaos.

When Mmabatho’s estranged parents, played by Sonia Mbele and Meshack Mavuso, unexpectedly arrive at an already tense dinner with Varshen’s traditional family, long-held secrets, clashing customs, and competing expectations threaten to derail the entire celebration.

Star-studded cast and creative vision

The series boasts a powerhouse South African cast featuring returning franchise favourites alongside seasoned comedy talent.

Jailoshini Naidoo and Koobeshan Naidoo star as Varshen’s parents, bringing their veteran comedic timing to the screen, while Denise Zimba reprises her iconic character Zama from How to Ruin Christmas.

Executive produced by Katleho, Tshepo, and Rethabile Ramaphakela, and directed by Johnny Barbuzano and Vivek Mehta, the project merges Burnt Onion Productions’ high-energy storytelling with Moodley’s deep expertise in South African Indian family dynamics.

Expanding Mzansi’s local storytelling

The release of How to Ruin Diwali: Meet the Parents reinforces Netflix’s ongoing commitment to investing in locally produced South African content that resonates both domestically and globally.

By exploring the rich intersections of South Africa’s diverse cultural communities through lighthearted comedy and emotional family drama, the franchise continues to establish a distinct voice in mainstream entertainment.

As the premiere date approaches, anticipation remains high for another festive chapter filled with humour, heart, and relatable family fireworks.
