Renowned actress Mona Monyane is officially divorced after a six-year legal battle that began when she first filed to end her marriage to fellow actor Khulu Skenjana in February 2020.

Monyane announced the news last week, celebrating what she described as finally being free after years of frustration and legal difficulties.

“When I tell you, I wept. I filed for divorce in Feb 2020 and only today, 28 August 2026, am I finally free,” Monyane said in a social media post.

A long road to freedom

Monyane and Skenjana married in 2016 and announced their separation in 2020. Although their relationship had ended, bringing the marriage to a legal close proved considerably more difficult. The actress previously revealed that she had attempted to file for divorce multiple times, including in 2020, 2022 and 2024. Despite those efforts, she remained legally married until the latest development.

Kaya 959 reported that Monyane said Skenjana had been refusing to sign the divorce papers, contributing to the prolonged process. The drawn-out legal battle became an important part of Monyane’s personal journey, with the actress speaking publicly about the emotional toll of the breakdown of her marriage and the difficulty of rebuilding her life.

Personal tragedy during the marriage

Monyane and Skenjana’s marriage was also marked by devastating personal loss. The now-divorced couple welcomed their first child in 2017, but later that year, lost their second child, Amani-Amaza, just seven days after her birth.

In 2025, Mona opened up about her experiences on the Showmax talk show UnTied, where she discussed heartbreak, divorce and her journey towards rediscovering herself.

A new chapter

Following the finalisation of the divorce, Monyane expressed particular gratitude to Sithole NI and Associates Inc, saying the legal firm assisted her on a pro bono basis. She also criticised what she described as a system that had left women and children without sufficient protection and claimed she had been scammed during the difficult period.

After six years of waiting, Monyane can now close the legal chapter of a marriage that formally ended in separation years ago. Her announcement was ultimately one of relief and gratitude. She thanked the people who supported her over the years and those who continued to pray for her.

“We made it!!! I’m divorced!!!” she declared.
