DJ Maphorisa explains how he drew inspiration from Cassper Nyovest

DJ Maphorisa has credited Cassper Nyovest with helping South African artists believe that stadium-sized ambitions are within reach.

The amapiano heavyweight recently praised the rapper during a discussion with Tbo Touch about the upcoming Scorpion Kings Live concert at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium.

As reported by Daily Sun, Maphorisa said Cassper’s achievements gave him and Kabza De Small confidence that they, too, could take their music to one of the country’s biggest stages.

Cassper made history in 2017 with his #FillUpFNBStadium concert, drawing about 68,000 people according to reports at the time. The milestone followed earlier successful #FillUp shows at the TicketPro Dome and Orlando Stadium.

Why Cassper Nyovest’s legacy matters

For Maphorisa, the significance goes beyond numbers. Cassper demonstrated that a South African artist could headline a major stadium without relying on an international act, helping shift perceptions about the commercial power of local music.

That example now resonates with the Scorpion Kings, the celebrated partnership between Maphorisa and Kabza De Small that has played a major role in taking amapiano from its South African roots to audiences worldwide.

Scorpion Kings take on FNB Stadium

The duo will bring Scorpion Kings Live to FNB Stadium on 19 September 2026. The concert follows their major 2025 performance at Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld Stadium and represents another significant step for amapiano’s live-music ambitions.

Maphorisa’s tribute to Cassper highlights an important part of Mzansi’s music story: success can create a pathway for those who follow. From hip hop’s #FillUp movement to amapiano’s global rise, South African artists continue to prove that local music can command enormous stages and audiences.

For the Scorpion Kings, FNB Stadium is therefore more than a concert venue. It is another opportunity to push the boundaries of what Mzansi music can achieve.
