Cape Town’s Safety and Security Mayco member JP Smith has rejected allegations made by National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Fadiel Adams at the Madlanga Commission, describing the claims as baseless.

JP Smith dismisses Fadiel Adams’ claims
Adams, who is continuing to give evidence before the commission, has alleged that Smith was linked to an alleged plot to have him killed. The claims have not been proven, and Smith has strongly denied any involvement.
During his testimony, Adams alleged that Smith used a newly elected councillor to approach a former gang leader in connection with the alleged plot.
According to Adams, the former gang leader was allegedly warned that his City of Cape Town tenders could be cancelled because Adams had been asking questions and investigating matters. Adams also claimed that more than one person had made statements under oath allegedly connecting Smith to the plot.
Smith has rejected the allegations and said they amount to a repeat of claims Adams previously made in 2025.
JP Smith releases a statement
In a statement shared on Facebook, Smith said he was aware that Adams had again attempted to damage his reputation by repeating what he described as unsupported allegations.
Smith said he stood by his earlier position that Adams had repeatedly made claims without evidence.
He also criticised the involvement of SAPS officials who, according to Smith, had previously taken part in what he described as an unlawful and unconstitutional raid of his office.
Smith further questioned how allegations were allegedly handled by officials in the Commercial Crimes Unit.
According to Smith, Adams’ testimony indicated that officials had told him how easily warrants could allegedly be obtained from magistrates to satisfy political interests.
Rather than calling for Adams’ evidence to be ignored, Smith said he welcomed the testimony because he believed it could ultimately shed light on the wider issue of political interference in policing.

He argued that the commission’s purpose is to investigate allegations of political influence within law enforcement and the possible misuse of policing processes for political purposes.
Smith said Adams’ attempt to raise allegations against him could instead allow the commission to examine how political interests may influence policing.
“The facts will speak for themselves,” Smith said, adding that he had nothing to fear from a proper examination of the allegations.
