Kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza honoured with heartfelt tributes at memorial service

Friends and family members recently gathered to honour the life of one of the country’s biggest musical talents Victor Bogopane who was famously known as Doc Shebeleza in what was a heart-warming memorial service.

The Kwaito legend passed away on the 9th of January after battling with a long illness. The news of his passing sent shockwaves through the entire entertainment industry as tributes flooded in from various parts of the country, sharing words of condolences to his family and loved ones affected.

On Wednesday, many gathered at the SABC Radio Park in Johannesburg to remember the man he was and reflect on the memories made throughout his 51 years on earth.

Highlighting some of his biggest traits, the spokesperson of the SABC Kaizer Kganyago stated that the late musician was a philanthropist, always putting the needs of others before his own ambitions.

During his heyday, the pair were good friends. He revealed that “Doc” often used to visit the SABC offices asking them for support to assist others in need.

“We then went out there from village to village building houses for the people. And we were giving people wheelchairs and groceries. He was the servant of the people,” said Kaizer.

Also in attendance was Vusi Leeuw from SAMIC (SA Music Industry Council) who shared Kaizer’s testaments regarding Doc Shebeleza’s love for people and philanthropy. He added that current musicians should learn from this.

Renowned musician Cassper Nyovest paid tribute to the singer, by rendering one of his popular hit songs, Doc Shebeleza, in honour of the late icon.

The singer will be laid to rest on Saturday where his funeral will be held at the Old Apostolic Church in Fairlands. Thereafter he will be buried at the West Park cemetery in Randburg.
