Award-winning actress and humanitarian Nomzamo Mbatha embarked on a journey of redesigning her kitchen.
Inspired by the concept of Casa Mbatha (House Mbatha), the project is about creating a home that reflects her values, celebrates her heritage, and provides a space where family, friendship and meaningful moments naturally come together.

Nomzamo Mbatha transforms her kitchen
Mbatha is carefully considering every element of the space, from the materials that will define its character to the appliances that will support the way she lives and entertains. Rather than following trends, her focus is on creating a space that feels enduring, personal and designed for the way she lives today: busy, connected, creative and constantly bringing people together.
Working alongside premium surface specialist Interslab, German-engineered appliance brand Miele and fabrication experts Interiology, Mbatha is exploring how natural textures, timeless finishes and integrated technology can come together to create a kitchen that is both beautiful and deeply functional.
“Home is where I reconnect with myself and with the people I love,” says Mbatha. “I’ve always believed that some of life’s best conversations happen around food, so creating a kitchen that feels warm, welcoming and beautifully designed was incredibly important to me.”
For Mbatha, whose career has been built on bringing stories to life, the kitchen is where some of life’s most authentic stories are told, around a shared meal, a morning coffee or an impromptu gathering with friends and family.

Vuyokazi Mhlophe, Head of Marketing at Interslab, says, “We’re seeing homeowners place far greater emphasis on materials, functionality and longevity than ever before. The kitchen is no longer just somewhere to cook. It’s one of the most lived-in spaces in the home, and people want it to feel as considered as every other part of their environment.”
For Mbatha, material selection has become one of the most important parts of the journey. Beyond aesthetics, surfaces play a defining role in how a kitchen feels, performs and ages over time.
From the warmth and character of natural stone to the practical considerations of durability and performance, every decision is being made with longevity, craftsmanship and everyday living in mind.
Bringing that vision to life is Interiology, the fabrication partner tasked with translating design intent into a beautifully crafted space through precision workmanship and meticulous attention to detail.
“Every Interiology kitchen begins with a client who knows exactly what they want, and this one is a proudly African story, made entirely by our own hands, that we cannot wait to tell,” says Keyan Theodorou, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Interiology.
For Mbatha’s kitchen, these carefully considered surfaces will be complemented by Miele’s fully integrated cooking appliances, designed for precision performance and intuitive use while blending seamlessly into the overall aesthetic.
“Today’s kitchens are expected to perform intuitively while maintaining a seamless design language,” says Sicelo Champion, Head of Brand Activation and Own Retail, Miele South Africa. “Our integrated appliances are designed to deliver precision, longevity and effortless usability, supporting both everyday routines and elevated entertaining.”

Beyond Nomzamo Mbatha’s renovation lies a bigger story
As South African homeowners become increasingly design-conscious, the conversation around luxury is evolving. The focus is shifting away from excess and towards spaces that feel intentional, personal and enduring. This shift is influencing not only materials and finishes but also the appliances homeowners choose, with increasing emphasis on performance, longevity and integrated design.
As the Casa Mbatha project takes shape, it offers a glimpse into a growing shift in South African design, one where materials, craftsmanship and thoughtful planning matter as much as the finished result. More than a kitchen renovation, it reflects a new way of thinking about the home: as a place where beautiful design supports everyday living, meaningful connection and lasting memories.
The completed space will be unveiled later this year, revealing the vision of Casa Mbatha brought to life.
