The last round of the United Rugby Championship (URC) was filled with emotions as multiple franchises entered their matches with a tribute to Cornal Hendricks.
The late Springbok and former Blue Bulls player passed away last Wednesday after suffering a severe heart attack at the age of 37. Cornal’s passing has since been a bitter pill to swallow and has sent shockwaves throughout the rugby community.
As teams entered the final round of the competition, many South African teams paid tribute to his legacy.
Stormers
On Friday, Cape Town-based team, the Stormers, honoured Cornal, who started his career in the Western Cape, by having a moment of silence in the 14th minute during their match against the Welsh team Cardiff. It was here that Cornal signed a contract in 2016, however, he never played a single match for the team, since he was later diagnosed with a heart condition, which forced him into early retirement.

Bulls
Following the news of his passing, the Pretoria side honoured his legacy by inviting fans to pay tribute to the late speedster by bringing flowers to the stadium to reflect on his life.
After receiving the go-ahead, it was at the Bulls where Cornal made his comeback and flourished since the day he returned to professional rugby. Here, he achieved much success in the form of a Currie Cup, Super Rugby Unlocked title, as well as being a finalist in the United Rugby Championship.

Sharks
The Durban-based team which features Springboks like Siya Kolisi, and Eben Etzebeth celebrated his life by creating a custom-made warm up jersey with the number #14 placed on the back.
It was later revealed that this was the idea of Eben Etzebeth, a former teammate at the Springboks.

Meanwhile president of SA Rugby Mark Alexander, praised Cornal for his resilience.
“Cornal was one of those players who loved the game, and he worked extremely hard, but he always did so with a smile on his face, treating all people with respect. His energy and love of life, on and off the field, lifted his teammates and those around him.
“His contributions to the sport and his unwavering dedication will always be remembered. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Stephaney, and their children, his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time. May his legacy continue to inspire future generations.”
