The rugby community has found itself in a state of disbelief following the sudden passing of former Springbok and Blue Bulls player Cornel Hendricks.
Cornel, best known for his on-field physicality and try-scoring abilities, is reported to have died of a massive heart attack. At the time of his passing, he was 37.
During the span of his career, he has been fortunate to have run out in the colours of multiple teams, some of which included the Free State Cheetahs, Blitzboks, Springboks, Blue Bulls, as well as the Wellington-based Boland Cavaliers.
According to SA Rugby Magazine, in 2016, the speedster signed a contract that would have seen him return to Cape Town, where he was set to play for the Stormers, however, he was later diagnosed with a serious heart condition that forced him to an early retirement. Showing resilience, he made his return to professional rugby by signing with the Bulls in 2018 and has since become a true stalwart of the team.

As of late, he has been grooming the next crop of talented players coming through the ranks when he returned to Boland rugby and was a key member of the squad at the time of his passing.
Following the shocking announcement, former teammates as well as rugby unions have been sharing tributes in honour of his legacy.
In an Instagram post, the Bulls wrote: “The Vodacom Bulls are deeply saddened by the passing of Cornal Hendricks, aged 37. A 12-time capped Springbok and key player for the Vodacom Bulls from 2018 to 2023, Cornal was known for his passion, energy, and infectious smile both on and off the field.”
