Hundreds of local and international tourists have found themselves stranded after a fire broke out at Cape Town’s Table Mountain.
The fire broke put on Thursday at the cable way’s lower station, affecting key facilities at the popular tourist destination. Reports by news publication TimesLive revealed that 400 people were forced to evacuate the premises, many of who m included both guests and staff.
In a statement SANParks says that the fire started in one of the buildings inside of a garage just before lunchtime, however, the Table Mountaiom National and the Cape Town fire department acted swiftly to ensure that everyone is safe.
Cape Town City fire and rescue services told the publication that a bank of lithium batteries caught fire and was the cause of the incident.
Following the incident which took place IOL reported that struggle engineers are yet to arrive at the lower cableway station where they will evaluate the extent of the damages.
“The fire did not reach the machinery that operates the movement of the cable cars. We were able to safely bring the people down from the top of the mountain on Thursday,” said Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC.

Wahida revealed that the operations of the cable way will be paused until they have a clear indication of the damage and safety is fully restored.
