English rugby player accuses Bongi Mbonambi of using racial slur

After the Springboks cemented their position in the Rugby World Cup finals to face off against New Zealand, reports have been circulating that hooker Bongi Mbonambi was accused of using a racial slur towards England’s flanker Tom Curry.

In an audio obtained by Daily Telegraph, Tom is heard asking New Zealander referee Ben O’Keeffe during the match, “Sir, Sir, if their hooker [Bongi] calls me a white c*nt what do I do?” Ben replies, “Nothing please.”

The above-mentioned international publication has also reported that there is no audible evidence of Bongi’s alleged racial abuse towards Tom.

After South Africa’s 16-15 victory, Tom was asked if Bongi, who refused to shake his hand at the end of yet another edge-of-your-seat match, said something to him that rubbed him the wrong way. Tom said, “Yeah… It does not need to be talked about.”

When asked about the alleged incident, Springboks assistant coach Deon Davids was quoted by the Daily Telegraph, saying, “I’m not aware of that, I’m not aware of any comment, if it was discussed.” He added, “I’m not sure what the comment was or when it was said. I don’t know.”

SA Rugby also commented on the accusation, having started their own investigation into Tom’s claim. “We are aware of the allegation, which we take very seriously, and are reviewing the available evidence. We will engage with Bongi if anything is found to substantiate the claim.”

Many social media users are adamant that Bongi did not utter a racial slur, but rather said something in Afrikaans that Tom mistook for a slur.
