It has not been long since the unexpected death of the popular American rapper Rich Homie Quan, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, who played an important role in hip-hop, particularly in the 2010s, influencing a whole generation of rappers locally and globally.
One of the artists influenced by Rich Homie Quan is mzansi’s very own Emtee, born Mthembeni Ndevu, and as a way to commemorate his memory, the ‘Roll Up’ hit-maker opted for a brand new tattoo near his shoulder. This tattoo is an addition to his extensive tattoo collection scattered all over his body.
Emtee can be seen enjoying what the youngsters call a ‘spliff’ while simultaneously getting the tattoo done, at the popular tattoo parlour, Moola Ink.

When Rich Homie Quan’s death was announced in late September, Emtee was one of the first South African celebrities to speak out and voice his heartbreak at the news. Although Emtee had not gotten the opportunity yet, Rich Homie Quan was also passionate about other cultures and artists and collaborated with Kwesta on a track called ‘Run it Up’.
It was through collaborations such as these that the South African community was exposed to and grew to Rich Homie Quan’s music. Similarly to Emtee, he was heavily into a subgenre of hip-hop that is called trap, which is characterised by its simple, rhythmic, minimalistic productions that use synthesized drums and since its inception, it has become one of the more popular subgenres in hip-hop.
