DJ Fresh shares reason behind Kaya 959 move

by Zintle Mdaka
DJ Fresh discussed his decision to join to Kaya 959.

Veteran radio personality Thato Sikwane, popularly known as DJ Fresh, has opened up about the decision to join Kaya 959, revealing that the move was motivated by a desire for growth, purpose, and a fresh challenge in his broadcasting career.

Known for his decades-long presence on South African airwaves, DJ Fresh’s move to the station marked a significant new chapter for the celebrated broadcaster, who continues to be one of the country’s most recognisable radio voices.

Kaya 959 becomes DJ Fresh’s new home

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, DJ Fresh revealed that talks with Kaya 959 actually started early last year. However, he was not immediately convinced because he was focused on building 938, a project he believed in and dedicated himself to completely.

“Not only did I commit to it, but I loved it, and I lived and breathed it, but circumstances changed, and I reached a point where I had to make a decision that was right for my family and my career,” he said.

“I’ve always been purpose-driven, always been about my why. It feels like purpose. I’m not going to pretend there isn’t a deep sense of gratitude because there is, but I think, more than anything, it feels like alignment. I wouldn’t say this is a comeback in the sense that I went away, but it’s definitely a homecoming of sorts to what I’m passionate about.

“A format I love. Commercial breakfast radio. This is where I feel the most alive,” he added.

Embracing new challenges

After years in the industry, DJ Fresh believes growth comes from stepping outside of familiar territory. He described the transition as an exciting challenge that allows him to expand his skills and explore new opportunities within the media landscape.

For many professionals, changing careers or workplaces can be daunting, but the broadcaster sees it as a necessary part of personal and professional development.

His decision serves as a reminder that reinvention is possible at any stage of one’s career and that embracing change can often lead to new opportunities.

A strong connection with the station

The broadcaster expressed enthusiasm about being part of a team that values creativity, innovation and genuine connection with its audience.

These factors ultimately convinced him that Kaya 959 was the right place to continue his radio journey.

Fans welcome the move

Many listeners have welcomed DJ Fresh’s move, expressing excitement about hearing him on the station. Supporters have praised the broadcaster for remaining passionate about his craft and continuing to evolve despite his many years of experience.

His latest chapter reflects a broader trend among media personalities who are embracing new opportunities and adapting to the changing landscape of broadcasting.

As DJ Fresh settles into his role, he remains focused on delivering engaging content and building meaningful relationships with listeners.

For the radio icon, the move represents more than just a change of station—it is an opportunity to grow, contribute and continue doing what he loves most: connecting with people through the power of radio.
