Former Miss Universe Nigeria and Miss Universe Africa & Oceania, Chidimma Adetshina, has returned to court in South Africa as her legal battle against deportation enters another critical phase.
The high-profile case, which has attracted widespread attention across Africa, stems from an ongoing dispute over her immigration status and citizenship documentation.

Latest developments in Chidimma Adetshina’s deportation case
Adetshina recently appeared before the Cape Town Regional Court as South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs continued its efforts to deport her.
The latest hearing focused on legal arguments regarding her immigration status, with the court expected to consider affidavits and evidence from both sides.
According to IOL and the court proceedings, Adetshina is challenging the government’s attempt to remove her from South Africa, arguing that she has taken steps to regularise her immigration status. Home Affairs, however, maintains that she is in the country unlawfully and should be deported under the Immigration Act.
The above-mentioned publication added that the Department of Home Affairs is seeking confirmation of Adetshina’s detention for deportation. The department also insists that she is not lawfully in South Africa and wants legal authority to detain her while deportation proceedings continue.
Adetshina, however, is challenging the process and opposing her detention. Her legal team has argued that alternatives to detention should be considered.

Why the case matters
The deportation proceedings have become one of South Africa’s most closely watched immigration cases, largely because of Adetshina’s international profile.
According to IOL, Home Affairs launched an investigation into identity documents allegedly connected to Adetshina and her mother. This matters amid the anti-immigration movement happening in the country.
The case has continued to garner traction due to the department allegedly finding prima facie indications of fraud and identity theft involving Chidima’s mother’s documentation.
The court is expected to hear further submissions before deciding whether the Department of Home Affairs can proceed with Adetshina’s deportation or whether her legal challenge will succeed.
