Cassper Nyovest comdemns violence after UJ campus shooting sparks public outrage

A brazen execution-style shooting outside the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Doornfontein campus has sparked widespread public outrage, with hip hop artist Cassper Nyovest leading online condemnation over the normalisation of daylight violence in South Africa.

The escalating threat to university precincts and public spaces

On 14 September 2026, two men, preliminarily identified by police as taxi owners, were gunned down inside a stationary seven-seater vehicle directly near the university entrance.

Cellphone video captured by onlookers and students quickly circulated across social media platforms, showing the bullet-riddled vehicle and capturing the immediate panic of commuters caught in the crossfire. The unconcerned, calculated manner of the assault, executed along a busy transit corridor during operating hours, highlighted a chilling lack of fear among the perpetrators.

This incident is not an isolated breach of security, but part of a deeply concerning pattern of violent crime bleeding into higher education zones across Gauteng. In early 2024, a similar drive-by ambush in nearby Braamfontein resulted in the deaths of two taxi association officials and fatally claimed an innocent university student caught in a passing bus.

The recurring proximity of heavy industry rivalries, taxi violence, and hitman activity to major academic campuses points to severe vulnerabilities in urban precinct management, visible policing, and rapid response deployment.

Crime experts and student governance bodies emphasise that when public executions occur at campus gates, the psychological toll extends far beyond the immediate crime scene.

Dawg how is this normal ? Just look at how chilled the gunmen is. A Toyota Corolla as a getaway car , cause like ain’t no need for speed to get out also cause I mean, this everyday for them. How does the president or the powers that be feel about this country they are leading ? https://t.co/UFyf5M5MQw

A growing demand for political accountability and structural reform

The viral footage has intensified a broader national conversation around the systemic breakdown of law and order in South Africa. Online discourse following the attack reflects overwhelming frustration with sluggish prosecutions, the unchecked proliferation of illegal firearms, and the perceived indifference of government leadership.

Taking to X, Cassper Nyovest expressed profound dismay over the casual nature of the assault, pointing out that the hitmen used a standard getaway vehicle without any apparent urgency or fear of police interception. His comments echoed the sentiments of thousands of citizens questioning how such blatant brutality has become an accepted background feature of everyday South African life.

As the South African Police Service (SAPS) continues its investigation with no immediate arrests made, pressure is mounting on national and provincial leadership to respond with more than standard statements of concern.

Civil rights groups, student leaders, and crime analysts are demanding the urgent deployment of specialised intelligence units to dismantle hitman syndicates across Gauteng before public spaces and educational hubs become completely untenable.
