Cartrack has released a detailed statement following the death of an employee, Gcina Dhladla, at its Rosebank offices, as online reports and allegations surrounding the incident continue to circulate on social media.

Cartrack confirms employee died after medical emergency
In its official statement, the vehicle tracking and fleet management company said it was “deeply saddened” by the passing of its colleague, who suffered a medical emergency at work on Saturday, 6 June 2026.
The company said the employee arrived at work at around 8am with no visible signs of illness. According to Cartrack, she later informed her manager at approximately 9am that she was feeling dizzy and nauseous. Her manager reportedly assisted her and accompanied her to the bathroom before checking on her a few minutes later.
When there was no response, facilities staff were called to open the door and trained first responders were activated. Cartrack said on-site responders immediately began assisting the employee using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) while emergency medical services were contacted.

Online claims suggest she had asked for leave
The incident has sparked widespread debate online, with some social media users alleging that Gcina had informed management she was unwell and denied leave.
Cartrack addressed these claims directly in its statement, saying that “sick leave has never been denied to our colleague or to anyone else.” The company added that the employee had previously taken sick leave on 1 June and had submitted a medical note, which management accepted.
The company also said Gcina had raised personal challenges affecting her outside of work during the week, and that these matters were handled confidentially and sensitively by her manager.
Mother speaks out in emotional interview
Meanwhile, speaking to Eyewitness News (EWN), the employee’s distraught mother, Smangele Dhladhla, shared her account of what happened before her daughter’s death.
According to Smangele, Gcina had been suffering from stomach problems and a runny stomach. She claimed her daughter soiled herself at work and was instructed to change her clothes and return to work afterwards.
Smangele further alleged that her daughter had called in to say she would not be able to work because her stomach was aching, but later received a warning when she returned to work.
These claims have intensified public scrutiny of the incident, although they have not been independently verified.

Cartrack warns against unverified allegations
In a second part of its statement, Cartrack acknowledged that tragedies of this nature naturally lead to questions and speculation. However, the company said it was “deeply concerned by the circulation of unverified allegations” relating to the incident.
The company said such claims had caused distress to employees, managers and first responders who were themselves grieving the loss of a colleague.
“Cartrack remains fully committed to a thorough and transparent investigation,” the statement read, adding that anyone with relevant information should provide it through the appropriate investigative channels.
Police and labour authorities investigating
Cartrack confirmed that a case has been opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and that the matter is under investigation.
The company also said it is cooperating with both law enforcement and the Department of Labour, and will continue to provide all information required to support the independent processes.
Support offered to family and staff
According to the statement, Cartrack has been in daily contact with the employee’s family through their designated representative and has offered support during what it described as an “extremely difficult time.”
The company also said counselling and assistance were being made available to employees affected by the tragedy.
Calls for clarity continue online
As investigations continue, the incident has become a major topic of discussion online, with many South Africans calling for transparency and accountability.
For now, the exact circumstances surrounding the employee’s death remain under investigation, and authorities are expected to determine the facts through the official process.
