Honouring an extraordinary life

Born Bernard Mlangeni in Orlando East, Soweto, the singer lived an extraordinary life and built a successful career that spanned six decades. Mlangeni is a familiar voice in many South African homes, with many growing up on his iconic music, including Mama Africa, Special Angel, and Woza La.

His sound was a great addition to the nostalgic South African 80s musical era.

Babsy lost his eyesight at age three, but it did not hinder his success. His career took off in the 1960s when he joined a musical group called the All Rounders, a group of blind musicians formed in Soweto.

Success as a solo artist

It was when the legendary artist started his solo journey as a musician that he earned his household name status, specifically through his first hit single Sala Emma. The song was inspired by his wife, which eventually became a South African classic.

His artistry and contributions to South Africa’s music industry were recognised in 2017 and 2025 when he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAMAs.

Beyond the music

Mlangeni challenged societal stereotypes, perceptions, and limitations placed on people living with disabilities at the time and empowered many artists living with disabilities. SABC News reports that the legend was an inspiration for other visually impaired artists such as Steve Kekana.

The artist will be remembered as a nostalgic voice across many generations. The country mourns a significant contributor to culture and music.
