Award-winning chef, author and television personality Lorna Maseko continues to redefine modern South African dining. On the 17th of July in Johannesburg, she hosted the eKhaya Dining Experience – an intimate six-course culinary event that blends storytelling, heritage and contemporary cuisine.
Inspired by the meaning of eKhaya (“home”), the experience offered guests the opportunity to gather around the table for an evening where every course reflected memories, culture and local ingredients.

A menu rooted in nostalgia
The carefully curated menu paid tribute to familiar South African flavours while elevating them through refined techniques.
During the dinner, guests were treated to dishes including amagwinya with chicken liver pâté, a bobotie dumpling with Cape Malay spiced kombu dashi, ibhisto bisque, Seven Colours reimagined as fine dining, a refreshing ginger beer slushy palate cleanser, and a nostalgic milk tart dessert.

Each course was paired with complementary beverages, adding another layer to the experience. Rather than reinventing South African cuisine beyond recognition, Maseko opted to celebrate its authenticity while presenting it in an elegant, contemporary way.

More than a meal
What makes eKhaya memorable is the atmosphere. The evening felt less like a formal restaurant service and more like being welcomed into someone’s home.

Warm hospitality, beautifully presented tables and thoughtful storytelling between courses encouraged guests to slow down and appreciate the connections between food, family and culture.
This aligns with Maseko’s long-standing mission of showcasing South African cuisine on the global stage and celebrating ingredients and traditions that deserve greater recognition.
Indeed, eKhaya Hospitality delivers exactly what its name promises: a genuine taste of home. The immersive celebration of South African identity is proof that local cuisine can be both deeply comforting and unmistakably sophisticated. The intimate dining experience is a definite must-do for food lovers seeking more than just dinner.
