by Kwanele Mathebula

Jazz legend and freedom fighter Hugh Masekela announced that he was battling prostate cancer and that he cancelled all future commitments over the past weekend.

The announcement was met with an outpouring of love and support from fellow musicians and South Africans.

We wish him a speedy recovery.

One of the people who have been hardest on me. Because he believes in me. Every chance I am in his presence he shows me what black excellence is. Gives me something to aspire to. We were in New York here. I snuck in to see him perform in this quaint jazz club where he was joined on stage by the sweet @somimusic. I’m heartbroken that he is suffering. I hope he’s surrounded by lots of love and that everything will be ok
