Are you a blabbermouth and don’t know when to keep quiet?

Having a bubbly personality is great, but if you find yourself talking nonstop, you might be a chatterbox.

By Boitumelo Mmakou

Psychologist Sharon Munyaka believes a person who shifts from conversation to conversation without giving the others a chance to talk is a blabbermouth or chatterbox. They are self absorbed and don’t have social etiquette. Blabbering may include gossiping, which is used as a strategy to keep an audience.

One way to tell if you’re a blabbermouth is when a crowd that looked or came across as happy with each other’s company starts to diminish as soon as you arrive. Sound familiar?

Well, if you’re a blabbermouth here’s what you should do:

1. Keep yourself in check and acknowledge that you often go overboard when talking and must learn to monitor that. This will help you control matters through consciously making the decision to think before you speak.

2. Ask yourself what your role was in the conversation. What did you intend to achieve when you started the conversation? At the end of the conversation how did you feel? How do you think others in the conversation felt?

3. Acknowledge your behavior. Admitting you talk too much is the first step to recovery. Acknowledge your blabbermouth tendencies and commit to being more aware.

4. Think before opening your mouth. Consider what you want to say and ask yourself if its beneficial, uplifting or positive.

5.Ask for help. Ask your family and friends to support you during the journey. Give them permission to highlight the times you go overboard.
