5 tips to keep your vagina clean

Keeping your vagina clean and healthy can be tricky in a world with so many myths and products. But, there are easy ways to keep it healthy and clean without incurring any expenses. By Mmasibidi Setaka

A vagina is the most intimate and sensitive part of a woman and has a distinct smell that varies from person to person. But, if you have an abnormal smell or discharge, you must see a doctor so they can rule out any health-related possibilities. Another thing to consider is your vagina’s pH level, which should be between 3.8 and 4.5.

According to Dr Howard Manyonga, an obstetrician-gynaecologist and head at The Birthing Team, the vagina has a mixture of organisms that maintain its health and keep it naturally acidic. This means that the use of vaginal washes can disturb this natural balance, sometimes resulting in discomfort or infection. Dr Howard also discourages the use of douches saying these cause an imbalance on the pH level.

Here are a few ways to take good care of your vagina:
• Shaving – Vaginal/pubic hair can make your private part sweaty and smelly, creating a breeding ground for yeast infections. So, it is wise to regularly shave it off. It also makes it easier to clean the V area, and your man will appreciate it, too!
• Washing – Plain water goes a long way; do not underestimate it! Use of soaps, bath salts, bubble baths and other things can actually harm your vagina.
• Underwear – Wear cotton panties as they are breathable and absorb moisture.
• Intimacy – Always practise safe sex in order to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
• Pap smears – It is advisable for sexually active women to do Pap smears at least once a year. Dr Howard says doing this enables early detection of cervix cancer. He adds that there are also specific viral tests that can be performed alone or in combination with the Pap smear to pick up any risks of cancer.
