SA Artists Making It Big Overseas

From Trevor Noah to The Soil, here are 8 impressive young South Africans rising to the top of their fields in the States.

Trevor Noah

trevor

This article was actually inspired by Trevor. How many young South Africans do you know that have their own full Wikipedia page? Trevor is one of them. Born in Soweto and budding in America, Trevor is proving to us that no dreams are ever too big.

Bucie

This talented Princess of house is as recognised in the U.S. as she is here at home; there was a period where she was actually bigger in America. It’s sad that other countries usually recognise our talent more than we do. But, we are glad that Mzansi has woken up!

Lira

We can definitely see why Lira was nominated for Best International Act (Africa) at the 2012 BET Music Awards. The songstress is talented and it not afraid to showcase her voice on international stages.

Our girl B! is not big in the U.S., yet, but she’s on our list for winning the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award for Best South African DJ. She beat out 94.7 DJ Whackead Simpson and 5fm’s Poppy Ntshongwana. Bow down!

Siba Mtongana

Sibahle Mtongana, professionally known as Siba Mtongana, is a South African chef, known for hosting the Food Network show Siba’s Table. She’s currently a judge on Chopped South Africa alongside Jenny Morris and David van Staden. Need we say more?!

Black Coffee

Have you met P Diddy? Well, Black Coffee has. He’s not on this list because of that though, Black Coffee is arguably one of the most influential musicians in Africa. He got his big break shortly after being chosen as a South African participant in the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy in Cape Town. Plus, he also has his own Wikipedia page.

The Soil

The Soil recently performed for the Queen of England. That’s enough for us.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Well, of course this list wouldn’t be complete with four-time Grammy winners. The group has been around for more than 50 years now. They are South Africa’s most prolific recording artists, with their releases receiving gold and platinum disc honours. The group has now become a mobile academy, teaching people about South Africa and its culture.
