Confidence Is Key

by Keletso Modisakeng

Confidence is key to helping you have a healthy body, mind and soul. When we think negatively about ourselves, we often project that feeling on others in the form of insults and gossip. To break this cycle of negativity, get in the habit of complimenting other people, even if its small achievements.

Work

When your level of confidence is high, your output at work will be high. Avoid being negative with sayings like “I cannot do this”; “That promotion is not for people like me”; etc. This list of self-sabotage is long, and comes with different issues. Make a vision board and clarify what you want for yourself. Once this is done, put a plan in place to make sure that you will achieve what you want. Your plan could include studying or getting a mentor to help guide you so you can achieve goals. These will help improve your confidence and how you handle work and people at work.

Friends

The golden rule with friendships is never having friends that need a lot of your emotional, social and psychological energy, as this will drain you. Being jealous of your friend creates the low confidence in your friendship. Work on what you want and, as you achieve it, your level of confidence will grow and you will be able to be happy for your friends’ achievements and successes.

Family

Your low confidence may make you work hard to earn the love of your family, and also to sacrifice to a point that you sell yourself short. You need to practise saying no and each time you say no, explain what is possible, and commit to that.

Relationships

The benefits of having confidence are that you bring a lovable person into your relationships, and do not burden people with your insecurities.

Tips to help build your confidence:

  • Imagine success in your work, school, relationships. This will help you succeed.
  • Make eye contact when talking to people. This shows confidence in what you are saying.
  • Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. The fact that you took the first step means you have room for growth.
  • Challenge yourself to achieve the goals you set in life.
  • Stop procrastinating and doubting yourself. If you have a goal in life, start acting!
