In the footage, Malesela appears to move rhythmically with another inmate, while what looks like an electronic device can be seen nearby. The clip has sparked conversations about prison conditions, security and the circumstances surrounding his detention.

Malesela Teffo’s legal troubles

Teffo became widely known during the high-profile Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, where he represented four of the accused before withdrawing from the proceedings in July 2022.

In September 2022, the High Court in Pretoria ordered that he be struck off the roll of legal practitioners following findings of serious professional misconduct. The court cited issues including dishonourable conduct, misleading the court and misconduct involving clients, reported SABC News.

His legal troubles resurfaced in September 2026 when he was arrested at the Legal Practice Council’s offices in connection with a warrant issued after a contempt-of-court finding. The arrest followed his appearance at the Johannesburg High Court, where he attempted to address proceedings involving alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Video sparks mixed reactions

The resurfaced footage has prompted different responses online. While some viewers expressed sadness about Teffo’s situation, others questioned how an electronic device, believed by some to be a cellphone, could be present inside a prison facility.

Some social media users also pointed to the challenges inmates face while adapting to prison life, including concerns about safety and harsh conditions.

However, the circumstances surrounding the recording, including when and where it was filmed, have not been independently established.

Prison authorities yet to comment

At the time of writing, there has been no public response from prison officials regarding the footage or questions raised about the electronic device seen in the video.

The resurfaced clip has once again placed Teffo in the public spotlight, years after his involvement in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial.
