With the festive season approaching, many South Africans are preparing for December holidays, family getaways and summer breaks. While finding affordable accommodation is exciting, it is important to do your homework before confirming a reservation.

From fake listings to unexpected costs, a poorly planned booking can quickly turn a dream holiday into a stressful experience.
Here are 10 things to check before booking festive season accommodation.
1. Verify that the accommodation is legitimate
Before making any payments, confirm that the property exists and that the person handling your booking is authorised to do so. Check its physical address, contact details and online presence. Be cautious of listings with unusually low prices or limited information.
2. Read reviews from previous guests
Reviews can help you understand what to expect. Check independent platforms for feedback about cleanliness, customer service, security and whether the accommodation matches its advertised photographs. Look out for repeated complaints.
3. Check the total cost
An advertised price may exclude additional expenses such as cleaning fees, parking, service charges or refundable security deposits. Ask for a complete cost breakdown before confirming your reservation to avoid unexpected expenses.
4. Understand the cancellation policy
Find out whether you qualify for a refund if you cancel or change your travel dates. Also establish what happens if the accommodation provider cancels your reservation. Always request the cancellation terms in writing.
5. Research the location
Check how far the property is from beaches, shopping centres, restaurants and other attractions. If travelling with children, consider accessibility, transport options and the safety of the surrounding area.

6. Confirm available facilities
Do not assume everything advertised will be available. Confirm whether the property offers Wi-Fi, secure parking, kitchen facilities, air conditioning and sufficient sleeping arrangements. Families should also ask about child-friendly facilities.
7. Be careful when making payments
The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has warned about holiday accommodation scams involving fake listings and fraudulent booking websites.
Avoid rushing into payments because of limited-time offers. Use reputable booking platforms and their official payment systems. Be cautious if you’re asked to pay into a personal bank account or use unusual payment methods.

8. Check security arrangements
Ask whether the property has secure parking, controlled access, functioning locks and appropriate security measures. If travelling with family, also establish what emergency arrangements are available.
9. Get written booking confirmation
Once payment has been made, request written confirmation showing your booking dates, number of guests, property address, total cost and payment details. Keep copies of receipts and conversations with the provider.
10. Confirm check-in and check-out times
Establish when you can arrive and when you must leave. If travelling long distances, ask whether late check-ins are allowed and who to contact if you experience delays.
Plan before you pay
Booking festive season accommodation should be exciting, not stressful. Taking time to verify a property, compare prices and understand booking conditions can help protect your money and holiday experience.
Remember, an attractive deal isn’t always legitimate. If something seems suspicious, investigate before making payment.
