Cheslin took to social media to thank everyone who has been checking in on him and sending messages of support as he continues his road back to the rugby field.
“For all those asking and checking in. Halfway there before I can finally chew a steak,” he wrote. “But thank you to everyone for their well wishes! Cannot wait to be back on the field again!”
The rugby star ended his message with a simple but faith-filled update: “One month in. God is in control.”

Cheslin Kolbe suffered a broken jaw against the All Blacks
Cheslin’s latest injury came during the Springboks’ 29-24 victory over New Zealand at FNB Stadium on 5 September 2026.
The 32-year-old had been moved to fullback for the match after Damian Willemse was ruled out with a hamstring injury. However, Cheslin’s appearance lasted just nine minutes.
He was injured while attempting to make a tackle on New Zealand loose forward Luke Jacobson. Cheslin was taken off the field and subsequently diagnosed with a broken jaw, reported RugbyPass.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed the injury after the match, ruling Cheslin out of the final Test against New Zealand in Baltimore.
A familiar injury for the Springbok star
The latest setback is particularly difficult for Cheslin because it is the second documented time he has suffered a broken jaw while playing Test rugby.
He previously fractured his jaw during the Springboks’ Test against Wales in Cape Town in 2022.
His latest injury also meant he had to spend time in hospital, where he was visited by his wife, Layla Kolbe. In an earlier update, Kolbe thanked fans for their support and his wife for being by his side during his recovery.
Cheslin Kolbe eager to return to the field
Despite the setback, Cheslin appears determined to focus on his recovery and eventual return to action.
His latest message suggests that he has reached an important milestone in his rehabilitation, while his reference to finally being able to “chew a steak” gives fans a lighter glimpse into what recovery has been like.
The Springbok winger’s return will depend on his medical recovery and clearance to resume contact rugby, but his latest update has given supporters another reason to remain hopeful.
For now, Cheslin is taking things one step at a time — and leaving the outcome in God’s hands.
