A police shootout ensued on the R80 highway on Monday, 28 September 2026, leaving three suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers fatally shot and a fourth in police custody. Officers recovered high-powered firearms and foiled an alleged planned robbery.

The fatal CIT shootout
The Citizen reports that police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the South African Police Service (SAPS) tactical response team, an Anti-Gang Unit, the Gauteng Traffic Airwing, and private security were following up on intelligence about suspects allegedly planning a robbery in the Olivenhoutbosch area of Pretoria.
Using further intelligence, the team identified the suspects’ vehicles. As the pursuit was in motion, the suspects unexpectedly travelled toward the north of Pretoria.
Nevhuhulwi explained that the multidisciplinary team spotted the suspects’ car, a white Hyundai H1, and a Toyota Avanza on the R80 highway. The officers then attempted to stop the vehicle with blue lights, but the suspects allegedly opened fire, resulting in the fatal shootout.
It is reported that an Ak-47 and a 9mm pistol were recovered from the vehicle.

The 4th suspect
Police report that they apprehended a fourth person suspected of working with the group. The driver of the Toyota Avanza was thus arrested and allegedly found in possession of a second 9mm pistol.
According to the police spokesperson, the investigation is ongoing, and the recovered firearms have been sent for ballistic testing to determine if they can be linked to any other crimes.
The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing in Gauteng, Major General Fred Kekana, is reported to have extended his gratitude to the multidisciplinary team for their extensive and continued efforts in intercepting and disrupting cash-in-transit robberies in the province.
