Easy ways to control your portions without feeling deprived

Portion control doesn’t have to mean eating tiny meals or giving up your favourite foods. Instead, it’s about becoming more aware of how much you’re eating and finding practical ways to build satisfying, balanced meals.

Start with your plate

One of the simplest ways to manage portions is to change how you fill your plate. Healthline recommends aiming to make vegetables or salad a generous part of your meal, then adding a moderate serving of protein and a portion of carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice, pasta or pap.

This approach can help you enjoy a filling meal without relying on large portions of calorie-dense foods.

Use smaller dishes

Plate and bowl size can influence how much food you serve yourself. Using slightly smaller crockery can make a moderate portion look more substantial, helping you feel satisfied without feeling as though you are eating less.

Eat slowly and mindfully

Give your body time to register that you are eating. As reported by ABC News, it helps to put your fork down between bites, minimise distractions such as television or scrolling, and pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues. Eating more slowly can make meals feel more satisfying.

Keep favourite foods

According to Healthy Food Guide, healthy eating doesn’t mean banning treats. If you enjoy chocolate, crisps or dessert, include a sensible portion rather than labelling the food as completely off-limits. Allowing room for favourite foods can make healthy eating feel more sustainable.

Make portions easy to see

When possible, portion snacks into a bowl rather than eating directly from the packet. For meals prepared at home, serving food onto individual plates can also make portions easier to judge.

Ultimately, portion control is about balance, not deprivation. Small, consistent habits can help you enjoy your meals while becoming more aware of how much you eat.
