In a dramatic escalation of ongoing investigations into top-tier law enforcement and political structures, South African Police Service (SAPS) officials executed a search and seizure warrant at the private KwaZulu-Natal residence of suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

The operation resulted in the confiscation of communication devices, marking the second time within a year that investigative teams have raided Mchunu’s property.
Court-authorised search and the ongoing investigation
The raid was conducted following a search and seizure warrant granted by the Johannesburg High Court, authorising investigators to identify and seize specific cellular devices based on designated international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) numbers.
Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sthembiso Mshengu, confirmed that the minister handed over a handset in the presence of his legal team, emphasising that Mchunu complied fully as a law-abiding citizen.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda clarified that the raid forms part of a standard investigative process tied to criminal dockets opened at the Durban Central police station. The open cases involve serious allegations, including defeating the ends of justice and fraud.

Escalating legal troubles and unreturned devices
The execution of the latest warrant highlights growing friction between Mchunu’s camp and law enforcement investigators. Statement details released by Mchunu’s office noted that the first set of communication devices confiscated during a previous raid had still not been returned by police, raising concerns over procedural delays.
“It must be noted that this is the second time the police have seized these communication tools without having returned the first set. Minister Mchunu will address these developments and many other matters that evolve around his name in the coming weeks,” commented Mshengu.
Mchunu was placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa following explosive allegations regarding political interference in sensitive policing operations.
Key among these were claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who alleged that Mchunu attempted to interfere with specialised operational units and protection frameworks.

The raid on Mchunu’s home coincides with wider probes into institutional corruption, intelligence infiltration, and organised crime networks currently being examined before judicial inquiries, including the Madlanga Commission.
