Ways to make cooking with your children more fun

Cooking with your children can be more than simply preparing a meal. It is an opportunity to spend quality time together while helping them develop practical skills, confidence and an interest in food.

With a few simple ideas, family cooking can become something everyone looks forward to.

Let them get involved

Children are more likely to enjoy cooking when they have a role to play. Café Bon Appetit recommends giving them age-appropriate tasks, such as washing fruit and vegetables, stirring ingredients, measuring flour or arranging food on a plate.

Younger children can help with simple jobs, while older children can take on more responsibility.

Make it playful

Turn cooking into a hands-on activity rather than a chore. Let your child choose between two vegetables for dinner, decorate homemade pizzas or create fun shapes with cookie cutters.

You could also explore flavours together by introducing ingredients such as chakalaka, or local herbs and spices.

Teach through food

According to Today’s Parent, cooking presents lessons beyond food prep. The kitchen is a natural place for learning. Measuring ingredients introduces basic maths, while discussing colours, textures and flavours encourages children to use their senses.

Older children can read recipes, practice following instructions and learn about kitchen safety.

Keep it safe and simple

Choose recipes that suit your child’s age and ability. Always supervise children around hot surfaces, sharp knives and electrical appliances.

Younger children can work away from the stove, while adults handle tasks involving heat or sharp equipment.

Focus on time together

Good Food recommends not worrying too much about making everything perfect. Cooking with children can be messy, and that’s part of the fun.

Praise their effort, taste the finished meal together and let them see that their contribution matters.

With patience, creativity and age-appropriate tasks, cooking with your child can become a fun family tradition — and a positive way to build healthy, practical habits.
