Spring has officially arrived in South Africa, bringing warmer days, blooming flowers and more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. With summer around the corner, now is the perfect time to make the most of the season.

According to South African Tourism, spring is one of the best times to visit Cape Town, particularly from September to October, when visitors can enjoy indigenous flowers and outdoor activities.

Whether you want to travel, get active or simply spend more time outdoors, here are some things to add to your spring bucket list.

1. Go on a picnic

Pack a blanket, snacks and your favourite drinks and head to a park, botanical garden or scenic outdoor spot.

Spring’s milder temperatures make it a great season for enjoying meals outside. If you’re planning a picnic, check the weather beforehand and remember to pack sunscreen and a light jacket.

2. Explore the spring flowers

Spring is one of the best times to appreciate South Africa’s incredible plant life.

According to the City of Cape Town, selected parks, public open spaces and greenbelts are being left unmowed during spring to allow indigenous plants and wildflowers to bloom.

The Western Cape is particularly famous for its spring flowers. SANParks says the 2026 wildflower season at West Coast National Park runs until 30 September, although the timing and intensity of blooms depend on weather conditions.

3. Take a scenic hike

Dust off your hiking shoes and explore a trail you’ve never tried before.

Cape Town Tourism notes that September and October are ideal months for outdoor activities such as hiking, while the cooler conditions can make spending time outdoors more comfortable.

Choose a route that matches your fitness level and check conditions before heading out.

4. Plan a weekend road trip

You don’t need to travel across the country to enjoy a getaway. Pick a nearby town, nature reserve, farm stall or coastal destination and make a weekend of it.

September is also Tourism Month in South Africa. According to the Department of Tourism, the month encourages domestic travel and highlights tourism opportunities across the country’s nine provinces.

5. Go whale watching

Add whale watching to your spring bucket list if you live near the coast.

Spring is a popular time for whale watching in parts of the Western Cape, with Cape Town Tourism highlighting whale watching among the seasonal activities to enjoy.

Hermanus and other coastal towns along the Whale Coast are popular choices for spotting southern right whales.

6. Have a beach day

You don’t have to wait for summer before visiting the beach.

Choose a warm spring day, pack sunscreen, snacks, a hat and a light jacket, and enjoy a few hours beside the ocean. You can also turn it into a sunset picnic or coastal walk.

7. Visit a botanical garden

Spring is the perfect excuse to visit a botanical garden and enjoy the flowers in bloom.

Take a leisurely walk, photograph the scenery or pack a picnic. It’s also a great low-cost activity if you’re looking for something to do with family or friends.

8. Try a new outdoor activity

Challenge yourself to try something you’ve never done before.

You could go cycling, kayaking, paddleboarding, horse riding or join an outdoor fitness class. South Africa’s generally sunny climate provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities, according to South African Tourism.

9. Refresh your wardrobe

Spring is a good time to go through your wardrobe and prepare for warmer weather.

Pack away some of your heavier winter clothes, bring out lighter outfits and identify pieces you no longer wear. Before buying new clothes, consider donating items that are still in good condition.

10. Give your home a spring clean

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean spending an entire weekend scrubbing your house.

Start with one room at a time. Clear out cupboards, organise your wardrobe, clean neglected spaces and donate items you no longer need.

A refreshed home can also give you a fresh start for the new season.

Spring won’t last forever, so make the most of it. Whether your ideal season involves adventure, travel, relaxation or quality time with loved ones, there are plenty of ways to create memorable experiences before summer arrives.
