Reverse migration: Why South Africans are coming home

For years, the South African migration story seemed to point in one direction: out.

Professionals packed up and left for different world cities, and families left in search of better salaries, greater stability and opportunities for their children. The phrase ‘brain drain’ became part of the national conversation.

But there is a quieter development taking place in the opposite direction.

Increasing numbers of South Africans who built careers and lives overseas are beginning to ask a different question: What if home is actually the better place to live?

This does not mean South Africa is experiencing a mass return of its diaspora. Analysts report that the change is gradual.

But new research, recruitment trends and anecdotal evidence suggest that some South Africans are no longer viewing emigration as a permanent decision. Instead, they are spending several years abroad, gaining international experience and savings, and eventually returning to Mzansi.

It is not simply about money anymore

One of the clearest signs of this shift comes from a 2026 survey by The TEFL Academy involving 173 South Africans who had lived and worked abroad.

The research found that family and social connections were among the strongest reasons people wanted to return.

About 77% said they missed spending time with family and lifelong friends, while almost 67% said they missed South Africa’s social culture. More than half cited the country’s outdoor lifestyle as something they missed.

In other words, the decision to come home is not necessarily a calculation about earning the highest possible salary. It is increasingly a calculation about quality of life.

Family is pulling people back

There is also something that spreadsheets cannot easily measure: belonging.

The Citizen reports that living overseas can be exciting, particularly during the first few years. But distance becomes more complicated when parents get older, siblings have children, and friendships continue without you.

For many, it is a recognition that certain parts of life cannot easily be recreated somewhere else.

Not a homecoming mass, yet

It is important not to overstate the trend.

EWN reports that South Africa still has a large diaspora, and outward migration remains an important feature of the country’s demographics. Estimates commonly put the number of South Africans living abroad at around 900,000 or more, although the exact figure varies depending on the definition and data source.

Statistics South Africa has also acknowledged the difficulty of measuring international migration. Its Migration Profile brings together data on emigration and return migration, but comprehensive, up-to-date figures on South Africans returning permanently are difficult to establish.

But for more South Africans, the answer appears to be family, lifestyle, financial flexibility and the realisation that home still offers something they could not find anywhere else.
