Airlink flyover raises global concerns

Airlink has raised global concerns about a formation flyover by two of its passenger aircraft at low altitude over the Cape Town DHL Stadium while it was packed with eager, excited fans.

The airline staged a flyover during the buildup to the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series game between South Africa and New Zealand on Saturday, 29 August 2026.

The global concern

The scheduled flyover prompted unexpected reactions worldwide, making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Many news networks stated that the aircraft were flying dangerously low and thus threatening the lives of others.

The New Zealand Herald reported that fans were left terrified as they thought that the planes almost collided, while the New York Post also reported that the aircraft left onlookers horrified.

Mzansi in defence mode

These reports did not go uncorrected by South African social media users, as many defended the actions. Locals stated that global media platforms do not understand how South Africans celebrate or express joy, causing a weekend-long global internet clash.

Mzansi was, however, very impressed with the pilots who flew the two aircraft with meticulous precision and well-planned execution, leaving everyone thrilled yet safe.

One social media user stated that the airline should fly internationally, pointing out the “superb” pilots.

Airlink responds to criticism

The airline did respond to concerns over the low-flying planes. They stated that the South African Civil Aviation Authority had offered clearance, guidance and support. IOL reports that both aircraft were carrying three senior pilots who served as commander, co-pilot and safety/technical officer to ensure the safe execution of the mini airshow.
