Advocate Lee Segeels-Ncube has found herself at the centre of a social media conversation after a 37-second video showing her singing at a private family celebration surfaced online.

The Johannesburg Bar advocate is currently known to many South Africans for her role at the Madlanga Commission, where she has been leading evidence relating to alleged corruption and failures within the country’s justice system.

Away from the serious proceedings, however, the short clip offered social media users a glimpse of the advocate’s more personal side.

Social media reacts to singing performance

In the video, Lee can be seen performing at what appears to be a private celebration. Some viewers were impressed by her singing ability, with several praising her talent and describing her as “multi-talented.”

Others were less enthusiastic about the performance, with some joking that she should “stick to being a lawyer.” Another social media user described the performance as a “wooden mic performance.”

The contrasting reactions quickly turned the short clip into a talking point, with social media users debating whether Lee has another talent outside her legal career.

Privacy concerns emerge

While much of the discussion focused on her singing, others questioned the decision to record and share moments from a private family gathering online.

Some social media users argued that people should be able to enjoy celebrations with their loved ones without worrying about being recorded and having personal moments circulated publicly.

The debate highlighted a familiar issue in the age of smartphones, where a private celebration can quickly become public once a video is shared online.

One sentiment expressed by viewers was that people should consider leaving their phones in their pockets and allowing families to enjoy their special moments without the expectation that everything needs to be captured for social media.

From the commission to a family celebration

Lee has gained significant public attention through her work at the Madlanga Commission, where she has been involved in questioning witnesses and presenting evidence during proceedings examining alleged corruption and misconduct affecting South Africa’s criminal justice system.

The singing clip offered a stark contrast to the formal and often serious environment associated with her legal work.

Whether viewers loved or criticised the performance, the video ultimately gave social media users a rare glimpse of the advocate outside the courtroom and commission hearings.

The mixed response also demonstrates how quickly ordinary family moments can become public conversations once they make their way onto social media.

Guys but when did we have the authority to share stuff like this?? Because we see them on TV doesn’t mean we should share everything they do?? https://t.co/CDuHaIfuoe
