Parents and caregivers in the Western Cape have until Monday, 17 August 2026, to submit school transfer applications for the 2027 academic year. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is urging families who wish to move their children to another school to act before the deadline.

The transfer window, which opened on 3 August, applies to learners in Grades 2 to 7 and Grades 9 to 12. The process is intended for parents or caregivers who want their children to transfer to another school for the 2027 school year.

Revised school transfer process
Changes have been introduced to the transfer application process this year. Depending on the learner’s circumstances, applications may be submitted online or through the school or district office.
Online transfer applications are available for specific circumstances, including when a learner has reached the highest grade offered at their current school, when a parent or caregiver has relocated for work, or when the family has moved to a different residential area.
The department has also indicated that parents who do not have access to the online system can submit a hard-copy transfer request form, together with the required supporting documents, to the school of their choice or their nearest district office.

Documents needed
With every application, parents should ensure it is accompanied by the relevant supporting documentation. The WCED lists documents such as the learner’s latest school report, identification or proof of the learner’s identity, and proof of address.
Parents are encouraged not to wait until the final day, as applications submitted after the deadline may not be processed during the official transfer window.
Once the transfer application period closes, schools will begin processing the requests from 18 August to 4 September 2026. Principals are scheduled to finalise and sign off transfer request statuses by 7 September, followed by further district-level processing.
Parents will receive a notification via email or SMS between 16 and 18 September, after which successful applicants will have from 16 to 30 September to confirm acceptance of their transfer placements.
