Why it’s okay to enjoy your own company

In a world where being constantly connected is often seen as a good thing, spending time alone can sometimes feel uncomfortable. Social media, group chats, busy schedules and packed calendars can make it seem as though we should always be surrounded by people.

But enjoying your own company is not something to feel guilty about. Spending time alone can allow you to recharge, reflect and reconnect with yourself.

It is also important to understand that being alone and feeling lonely are not necessarily the same thing. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), some people can be socially isolated but enjoy solitude, while others can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely because their relationships aren’t satisfying.

Here are some reasons why learning to enjoy your own company can be beneficial.

You get time to recharge

Socialising can be enjoyable, but constantly being around other people can also leave you wanting some quiet time.

Having time to yourself allows you to step away from conversations, expectations and busy schedules. You can use that time to relax without having to accommodate anyone else’s plans.

Even something as simple as enjoying a cup of coffee alone, taking a walk or watching your favourite show can allow you to slow down.

You can learn more about yourself

When you’re constantly influenced by friends, family, colleagues and social media, it can be difficult to hear your own thoughts.

Spending time alone gives you space to consider what you actually enjoy, what matters to you and what you want from your life. You may discover hobbies, interests or goals that you wouldn’t have explored if you were always waiting for someone else to join you.

You become more comfortable with yourself

Learning to enjoy your own company can strengthen your sense of independence.

Instead of feeling as though you always need someone else to accompany you, you can become more comfortable doing things on your own. That might mean going to a restaurant, seeing a movie, shopping or simply spending a quiet weekend at home.

This doesn’t mean you don’t value relationships. It simply means you can appreciate your own presence while still enjoying meaningful connections with other people.

You can take a break from social pressure

There can be pressure to keep up with everyone else’s lives, particularly through social media.

You might see friends attending events, travelling, going out or spending time with their partners and feel as though you’re missing out.

Choosing some alone time can help you step away from those comparisons and focus on your own life rather than measuring it against someone else’s highlight reel.

You have more freedom

One of the best things about spending time alone is that you get to make the decisions.

Want to spend the entire Saturday reading? Go for it. Want to try a new restaurant? You don’t have to wait for someone else’s schedule. Want to stay home in comfortable clothes and watch movies? That’s perfectly fine too.

Doing things alone can remind you that you don’t always need a group to enjoy an experience.

Solitude can give you space to reflect

Quiet moments can help you think about your goals, relationships and priorities without the usual distractions.

Whether you enjoy writing, painting, photography, cooking, music or another creative hobby, spending some time away from distractions can allow you to explore your interests.

You don’t have to be an artist to benefit from this. Journaling, planning your goals or simply allowing yourself to think can also be valuable forms of reflection.

You can become more self-reliant

Being comfortable alone can encourage you to make decisions independently and become more confident in your own judgement.

That doesn’t mean refusing help when you need it. Healthy independence also involves recognising when you need support and being willing to ask for it.

Enjoying your own company doesn’t mean you don’t need people

There is an important distinction between healthy solitude and prolonged social isolation.

According to the American Heart Association, social isolation and loneliness are associated with poorer cardiovascular and brain health. Its scientific statement found that social isolation and loneliness were associated with increased risks of heart attack, stroke and premature death.

The NIH similarly stresses the importance of social connections, noting that people with strong social bonds tend to have better health outcomes, while loneliness and social isolation can negatively affect physical and mental health.

So, enjoying your own company doesn’t mean cutting yourself off from everyone else. The goal is balance.

The bottom line

There is nothing wrong with enjoying your own company.

You don’t need a packed social calendar to have a fulfilling life. Spending time alone can give you room to rest, reflect, pursue your interests and become more comfortable with yourself.

At the same time, solitude doesn’t have to replace human connection. You can enjoy your own company while still making space for the people who matter to you.

Ultimately, learning to be comfortable alone can be a valuable reminder that you don’t always need someone else beside you to create a meaningful moment.
