South Africa has been transformed into a winter wonderland as a powerful cold front brings heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures and difficult travel conditions to parts of the country.

South Africans embrace the snow

Snow has been reported across high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, with residents taking to social media to share photographs and videos of snow-covered roads, mountains, homes and landscapes.

For many South Africans, these unusual conditions have provided a rare opportunity to experience snow close to home. Social media timelines have been filled with images of people walking through snow, building snowmen and photographing landscapes covered in white.

The South African Weather Service linked the snowy conditions to the interaction of an upper-air cut-off low and a surface cold front. The system was drawing very cold air and moisture across the country, producing snow over mountainous areas.

Roads and mountain passes were affected

However, behind the beautiful photographs, the weather also created serious travel problems. Several mountain passes in the Eastern Cape were temporarily closed because of snow and dangerous driving conditions, including Penhoek Pass, Boesmanhoek, Barkly Pass, the R405, R415, and N9.

Authorities deployed graders to clear snow from affected routes, while rescue teams assisted motorists who became trapped on Barkly Pass.

KwaZulu-Natal also experienced heavy snowfall, with several routes temporarily closed before some were reopened. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid attempting to drive on roads that have been closed because of hazardous conditions.

Some parts of the Western Cape were also affected, with the Swartberg Pass, between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert, closed because of snowy conditions.

For the time being, many South Africans continued to snap shots enjoying the spectacular moment from a safe distance, capturing snowy mountains, white-covered roads and playful family moments that have turned social media into a virtual winter gallery.
