The enduring legacy of the late reggae icon Lucky Dube is set to inspire a new generation of artists following the launch of a performing arts school, Lucky Dube Secondary School of Performing Arts, in his hometown of Ermelo, Mpumalanga.

The initiative, established in honour of the celebrated musician, aims to nurture young talent by providing training in music, dance, drama and other creative disciplines. It also serves as a tribute to Dube’s remarkable contribution to South African music and culture.

The school was opened on the icon’s 62nd birthday.

A lasting tribute to a music legend

Lucky remains one of South Africa’s most influential musicians, with a career spanning more than two decades and a catalogue of songs that continue to resonate with audiences around the world.

The new performing arts school seeks to preserve his legacy by creating opportunities for aspiring performers, particularly young people from local communities who may not otherwise have access to formal arts education.

By investing in the next generation of creatives, the school hopes to reflect the values that defined Lucky’s career—hard work, discipline, storytelling and using music as a tool for positive change.

The academy will offer aspiring artists a platform to develop their talents through structured training and mentorship.

Students will have the opportunity to explore various aspects of the performing arts, including:

  • Music performance and vocal training
  • Dance
  • Acting and theatre
  • Stage production and performance skills
  • Creative expression and artistic development

The programme is expected to help learners build confidence while preparing them for careers within South Africa’s growing creative industry.

Honouring Ermelo’s most famous son

For the people of Ermelo, the performing arts school represents more than just an educational institution—it is a celebration of one of the town’s greatest cultural icons.

Lucky’s music transcended borders, tackling themes such as love, unity, inequality and social justice. Decades after his passing, his songs continue to inspire listeners across Africa and beyond.

Naming the school in his honour ensures that his influence extends beyond his music, allowing young artists to pursue their dreams while learning about the legacy of one of South Africa’s greatest performers.

Keeping Lucky Dube’s legacy alive

The launch of the Lucky Dube Secondary School of Performing Arts marks another important milestone in preserving the icon’s contribution to South African arts and culture.

As young performers walk through its doors, they will not only learn artistic skills but also carry forward the spirit of excellence, resilience and hope that defined Lucky’s extraordinary career.

The initiative stands as a powerful reminder that while the legendary musician may no longer be here, his influence continues to shape and inspire future generations.
