Broadcaster Gareth Cliff has weighed in after a recent report scrutinising AfriForum’s finances sparked widespread debate online. He questioned the motives behind the coverage and defended the civil rights organisation against its critics.

Report puts AfriForum’s finances under the spotlight
The debate follows a recent report by News24 examining AfriForum’s financial statements, which alleged the organisation collected around R1.6 billion from members over several years and analysed how those funds were spent. The report highlighted expenditure on salaries, marketing, legal matters and community initiatives, prompting widespread discussion on social media.
AfriForum has rejected suggestions of financial impropriety, saying the report misrepresents its finances and defending its spending as necessary to fund its operations, legal work, community safety projects and other initiatives. The organisation has also published a response disputing the report’s conclusions.

Gareth Cliff defends AfriForum
Joining the online conversation, Gareth came to AfriForum’s defence after a link to the report was shared on social media.
Gareth criticised what he viewed as selective reporting and questioned why the organisation’s finances were receiving so much attention compared to those of other institutions.
His remarks quickly gained traction, with supporters agreeing that AfriForum was being unfairly targeted, while others argued that any organisation operating at such a scale should be subject to public scrutiny.
