Viral footage of South African tourists at Mozambique restaurant raises questions

A video circulating on social media has sparked widespread discussion after allegedly showing a group of South African tourists being chased out of a restaurant in Mozambique.

According to posts shared online, the incident reportedly occurred during a confrontation between restaurant staff and the visiting tourists.

The footage, which has been widely viewed across several social media platforms, appears to show a tense exchange before the group leaves the establishment.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and the reason for the confrontation has not been independently verified.

Social media users have offered differing accounts of what led to the altercation, with some alleging a misunderstanding, while others have suggested the dispute escalated over disagreements inside the restaurant.

Many have described this as a direct response to anti-immigrant violence in South Africa.

Some families were filmed walking out of restaurants under pressure from the crowds, while some answered back, engaging in arguments.

What sparked backlash for South Africans?

The confrontations follow weeks of escalating unrest in South Africa, where vigilante groups have been driving out foreign nationals, in some cases destroying their businesses.

Mozambican authorities confirmed that hundreds of their citizens have since returned home, while several Mozambicans were reportedly killed during the violence.

The Mozambican government publicly raised concerns about the deaths of its nationals in what it described as xenophobic attacks. South Africa receives over one million Mozambican visitors annually, and the relationship between the two neighbouring countries has historically been close, making the current climate more alarming for both governments and travellers.

As the video continues to circulate, further information is expected to emerge that may clarify what transpired and whether any official investigation will follow.

Yesterday, in one of my posts, I spoke about the need for President Cyril Ramaphosa to convene a meeting of SADC leaders, and eventually African leaders, to discuss the issue of immigration, which, as we have seen, has taken a very ugly turn.
