The United States’ dream of lifting the FIFA World Cup on home soil came to a painful end after a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16, bringing an early conclusion to the host’s tournament.

USA’s World Cup campaign ends
Playing in front of a packed home crowd, the Americans entered the knockout clash with high expectations after an impressive group-stage campaign and a confident 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. However, Belgium proved too strong, punishing defensive mistakes and dominating key moments of the match.

The result means all three of the co-hosting nations in the US, Mexico and Canada have been eliminated in the Round of 16.

Belgium took control early with a composed attacking display, building a comfortable lead before the United States managed to pull one goal back. Any hopes of a dramatic comeback were quickly extinguished as Belgium added further goals to secure an emphatic 4-1 victory and a place in the quarterfinals.

The US hit back in the 31st with Malik Tillman’s equaliser, but the Belgians had a quick response, and Charles De Ketelaere was on target again just two minutes later.

Belgium’s Hans Vanaken added a third in the 57th minute after a catastrophic defensive display from the US team, and substitute Romelu Lukaku sealed the win in stoppage time.

The Belgian team now advances to the quarterfinals full of confidence, where an even tougher challenge awaits as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.

In the quarterfinals, Belgium will face European champions Spain, who beat Portugal 1-0.
