After captivating audiences for years with her portrayal of MaMlambo on Uzalo, Gugu is embracing a new chapter through the character of Phumelela Dube — a woman she says embodies strength, ambition and complexity.

Phumelela Dube, a character with depth and ambition

TVSA reported that in eGagasini: Waves of Change, Phumelela is introduced as the wife and business partner of music mogul Senzo Dube, played by veteran actor Meshack Mavuso. Intelligent, strategic, and fiercely determined, Phumelela is a driving force behind the family’s business empire and is unafraid to pursue what she believes in.

For Gugu, portraying a woman with so many layers has been both challenging and rewarding.

According to Daily Sun, the actress explained that she was immediately drawn to Phumelela’s resilience, confidence, and emotional depth, adding that playing such a multifaceted character has allowed her to explore aspects of storytelling she has always been passionate about.

She recently shared that stepping into new and diverse roles has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing audiences to see different dimensions of her talent beyond the beloved characters she has portrayed in the past.

A role that feels personal

According to Gugu, every role she takes on is approached with gratitude and commitment, but there is something particularly special about Phumelela.

The actress said she admires Phumelela’s determination, strength and unwavering belief in herself — qualities that resonate with her own personal journey. That connection, she believes, helps bring authenticity and emotional truth to her performance.

Excitement for what’s ahead

As audiences get to know Phumelela, Gugu hopes viewers will connect with the character’s complexity and appreciate the journey she undertakes throughout the series.

For the award-winning actress, the role represents more than just another television appearance — it marks an exciting new chapter in a career that continues to evolve, proving that some of the most meaningful opportunities arrive when artists are ready to embrace change.
