Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus named his 46-man squad for the inaugural Nations Championship, blending World Cup-winning experience with exciting young talent as South Africa prepares to launch its campaign against England on 4 July in Johannesburg.

The squad includes six uncapped players, underlining Erasmus’ commitment to building depth ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup, while maintaining the core of the team that has dominated world rugby in recent years.

The newcomers

The newcomers include loose forward Paul de Villiers, lock Ruben van Heerden, prop Carlu Sadie, utility back Jaco Williams, and Junior Springbok stars Riley Norton and Vusi Moyo.

According to The Citizen, the squad includes 28 forwards and 18 backline players, with Paul de Villiers, Riley Norton, Ruben van Heerden and Carlu Sadie being the four uncapped forwards. At the same time, Vusi Moyo and Jaco Williams are the two new backs in a largely experienced squad.

This squad gives Erasmus a wealth of options as the world champions prepare for a demanding Nations Championship schedule.

Returning players

Several players who were unavailable during the Springboks’ recent preparations have returned to the fold, including a strong contingent from the Vodacom Bulls following their United Rugby Championship commitments.

Among those back in contention are Handré Pollard, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Cameron Hanekom, Ruan Nortjé, Wilco Louw and Canan Moodie.

Speaking after the announcement, head coach Erasmus expressed excitement about the balance within the group, highlighting both the experience of established internationals and the promise shown by the uncapped players during recent training camps and representative matches. He believes the new faces have already demonstrated they can make the step up to Test rugby.
