The relationship between Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, Nhlamulo Ndhlela and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has deteriorated dramatically over the past year, culminating in their expulsion from the party last week.
What began as internal disagreements over leadership and party discipline has evolved into one of the most significant internal crises facing the MK Party since its formation.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla and Nhlamulo Ndhela speak out
According to a report by IOL, Ndhlela and Zuma-Sambudla have described the expulsion as the work of forces that are within the MK Party trying to hijack the party from former President Jacob Zuma.
During her tenure in the party, Zuma-Sambudla served as an MP and became a prominent public defender of both her father and the MK Party. Her outspoken style made her one of the party’s most recognisable personalities.
IOL reports that the former members will go to court to challenge their expulsion, opening another can of worms related to the party.

Speaking to the media
At a media briefing last night, 21 June 2026, the two claimed that “the current developments cannot be viewed in isolation. Since the formation of the MK Party, there have been several attempts by individuals and factions to capture, manipulate, and ultimately hijack the organisation for personal and political gain.”
Ndhlela also alleged that these concerns came to light back during the 2024 elections, further claiming, “We are concerned that similar efforts may now be underway in relation to preparations for the upcoming Local Government Elections. There appears to be an emerging attempt to manipulate candidate selection processes and municipal lists in a manner that excludes the participation and voice of ordinary members and communities at large.”
What to expect from Zuma-Sambudla and Ndhlela
Zuma-Sambudla and Ndhlela have indicated that they dispute the legality of their expulsion and are getting ready to pursue legal avenues to challenge the decision. They believe the disciplinary process was unlawful and are preparing further action.
The saga has become one of the most consequential internal battles in the MK Party’s short history, and South Africans are eager to see what happens next.
