Bayanda Walaza claims victory

The 20-year-old rising star produced a blistering performance against a strong international field, reminding the athletics world why he remains one of South Africa’s brightest prospects.

Walaza’s victory marked an important milestone in his 2026 campaign as he bounced back from recent setbacks to claim top honours at one of Europe’s most respected athletics meetings.

He produced a statement performance, storming to victory in the men’s 100m in a blistering 9.94 seconds.
Not only did the time secure the win, but it also matched his personal best and lifted him to the top of the South African 100m rankings for 2026.

Walaza crossed the finish line ahead of Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who finished second in 9.99, while world indoor champion Jordan Anthony placed fifth in 10.20.

The triumph represents another significant chapter in the young sprinter’s rapidly growing career. Walaza first captured global attention when he helped the country secure Olympic silver in the 4x100m relay at the Paris Games before going on to claim double gold in the 100m and 200m at the World Under-20 Championships.

If his performance in Ostrava is any indication, the speedster is once again ready to challenge the world’s best and continue his rise among the elite ranks of global sprinting.

For South African athletics, the message from Ostrava was clear: Bayanda Walaza is back on top.
